State senators take leadership posts

Several members of the Oregon Senate, whose districts connect with Portland Community College, have taken leadership roles during the interim between legislative sessions.

Senate President Peter Courtney this week announced appointments to interim committees. The interim appointments have been known in the past as the Emergency Board or E-Board.

Lawmakers in leadership, whose districts intertwine with that of PCC, include:

  • Sen. Mark Hass of Beaverton is chair of the Education and Workforce Development Committee.
  • Sen. Jackie Dingfelder of central eastside Portland is chair of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee.
  • Sen. Ginny Burdick, whose district includes the Sylvania Campus, is chair of the Finance and Revenue Committee.
  • Sen. Chip Shields, whose district includes the Cascade Campus, is chair of the General Government, Consumer and Small Business Protection Committee. Sen. Larry George of Sherwood is vice chair.
  • Sen. Diane Rosenbaum of central eastside Portland is chair of the Rules Committee.

The Ways & Means committee is the Legislature’s budget-writing body, and several metro-area lawmakers have leadership roles on its subcommittees as well.

  • Sen. Richard Devlin of Tualatin is chair of the overall Ways & Means Committee, while Sen. Betsy Johnson of Columbia County is co-vice chair.
  • Sen. Rod Monroe is co-chairman of the Education Sub-Committee. He is a member of the Board of Directors for Mount Hood Community College.
  • Sen. Johnson of Columbia County co-chairs the General Government Sub-Committee.
  • Sen. Burdick of southwest Portland chairs the Joint Committee on Tas Credits.
  • And Sen. Devlin of Tualatin co-chairs the Joint Committee on Legislative Audits, Information Management and Technology.

The Oregon House committee memberships will be announced later this summer.

The interim committees are expected to meet Sept. 21 to 23; Nov. 16 to 18; and Jan. 18 to 20, 2012. The next legislative session is set for February 2012.
