Longtime counselor publishes book on Oregon bridges
Photos and story by James Hill
Ray Allen, a long-time employment and vocational rehabilitation counselor, has recently published a book, “Oregon Coast Bridges,” (North Left Coast Press). The book profiles 40 of the Oregon Coast Highway’s most important and interesting bridges, from Astoria to the California border.
It includes more than 150 contemporary photographs by Jim Norman (photographer for The Portland Bridge Book) and the author, along with many other historic photos from the Oregon Department of Transportation History Center.
It relates interesting historical anecdotes of the bridges and their surroundings, a chapter on the development of the Oregon Coast Highway, and a short biography of Conde B. McCullough, Oregon’s master bridge designer, who designed many of the best bridges along the coast and around Oregon.
The book can be previewed and purchased through the website www.oregoncoastbridges.com. For more information, contact Allen at raya503@hotmail.com.
