Sylvania kicks off PCC Reads activities with science ethics presentation
Photos and story by Kate Chester
Mark the calendar to catch one of the first Sylvania Campus events to support this year’s PCC Reads choice, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”
Dr. Steven Kolmes, chair of Environmental Sciences and the Molter Chair in Science at the University of Portland, will present “Toxic Water, Toxic Fish, and Social Justice” on from 3:15 to 4:20 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, in Room 107, Sciences and Technology Building at Sylvania.
The talk will address the process of establishing human health criteria and public policy for fish consumption, and will offer a scientific critique and ethical analysis for at-risk human communities – especially Tribal peoples – in Oregon.
The presentation – which is open to all PCC students, staff and faculty – supports the district-wide initiative PCC Reads, a community-building reading activity that brings together students, faculty and staff throughout the college to critically examine issues of race, equity and social justice.
In the event of questions, contact Kate Chester, Community Relations manager at Sylvania, at (971) 722-8233.
