Here is a look at some of the news stories about PCC from around the local area and the nation in February. In total, PCC events and people appeared 59 times in the local community or national online media, newspapers or TV/radio:

Feb. 1: Willamette Week, Portland Tribune, The Oregonian& Portland Observer: Docking in Portland as the opening-night selection of the 22nd Annual Cascade Festival of African Films, “Scheherazade” from Egypt contains a number of images presaging Tahrir Square.

Feb. 1: Portland Observer, Portland Tribune, Forest Grove News-Times & Lake Oswego Review: The new dual enrollment agreement with PSU and PCC establishes application deadlines, allows students to apply online and opens PSU housing to co-admitted students on a space available basis.

Feb. 3: The Skanner, Oregon Live & The Oregonian: Portland Community College will be bringing in Mississippi Civil Rights veteran Hollis Watkins to speak the week of Feb. 6-11.

Feb. 3: The Oregonian & Hillsboro Argus: The jarring juxtaposition of sheep grazing quietly beneath hundreds of new solar panels will soon take shape on Portland Community College’s Rock Creek campus.

Feb. 8: The Skanner. KGW TV & Portland Tribune: Jefferson High School’s Middle College for Advanced Studies has three new partners.

Feb. 9: Portland Tribune: Former PCC instructor and musician Thara Memory can add “Portland Jazz Master” to his lengthy resume.

Feb. 9: Ashland Daily Tidings: Guitarists David Franzen and PCC music department head John Mery are veteran members of the Oregon Guitar Quartet and helped to start the ensemble about six years ago.

Feb. 14: K103 FM, Lake Oswego Review & Lake Oswego Review: Portland Community College grew by 6.5 percent in total headcount, according to fourth week reports – the traditional reporting week for PCC.

Feb 14. Newberg Graphic: Portland Community College’s newest location – the Newberg Center – served as the site for a legislative town hall on Saturday, Feb. 4, hosted by United States Senator Ron Wyden.

Feb. 20: AXS Gear Blog: Starting April 4, students can once again learn about the anatomy of longboards and ride with control from instructor Robin McGuirk at Mt. Tabor Park in Longboarding 101.

Feb. 21: The Oregonian: Students from Mt. Hood Community College and four Portland Community College campuses joined students on the PSU campus Tuesday afternoon to rally for better state funding of higher education.

Feb. 21: Beaverton Valley Times & Oregon Live: Linda Degman will be the Beaverton School Board’s newest member.

Feb. 21: Cannon Beach Gazette: Professor James S. Harrison will present a program entitled, “Black Inventors: America’s Best Kept Secret” at Clatsop Community College.

Feb. 22: Oregon Capitol News: Preston Pulliams said that institution has seen a 40 percent enrollment increase since 2008 but has had to make cuts to course offerings, faculty and staff.

Feb. 23: Bike Portland Blog: A student group at Portland Community College’s Cascade campus in North Portland has launched a bike rental program.

Feb. 23: The Oregonian: Construction crews are expected to begin work this fall on a massive expansion Southeast Center, creating a new landscape that college officials hope will be more welcoming to the surrounding neighborhoods and businesses.

Feb. 24: The Oregonian: Florence Wood’s wages from a part-time job at Fabric Depot just cover her rent. She walks or takes the bus to work or classes at Portland Community College, where she’s studying to be a social worker.

Feb. 27: The Oregonian: March is National Women’s History Month and Portland Community College will be hosting a poetry reading and book signing by 2011 National Book Award winner Nikky Finney.

Feb. 29: Forest Grove News-Times: A half-century’s worth of artifacts from life at Portland Community College will be on display this winter and spring at the Oregon Historical Society.
