Using the Building as a Tool for Teaching Sustainability
Photos and story by Gina Whitehill-Baziuk
Students from Portland Community College’s architectural and drafting program toured Newberg Center with project architect Erica Dunn with Hennebery Eddy to learn about the building’s innovative sustainable features.
They were able to see first-hand the use of natural ventilation, daylighting, and photovoltaic panels that will allow the Newberg Center to reach net-zero energy use. Creating opportunities to engage students and use the building as part of the curriculum is exactly what PCC envisioned for Newberg Center—a living laboratory where students could learn from real-world applications of sustainable and energy-efficient design.
