Community gets a “virtual tour” of new buildings planned for Cascade

Photos and story by

The fifteen community and campus members of the Cascade Bond Advisory Committee got a bird’s eye view of future improvements planned for Cascade Campus on Thursday, April 5, 2012.

The design team, led by THA Architects Will Dann and Nick Hodges, used computer generated images to “walk” the audience around the outside of the buildings and through the extended campus mall and green spaces.  The schematic designs illustrate the visual, physical and operational connections between the two new buildings, the underground garage, and surrounding streets and pedestrian walkways.

In addition to committee members and PCC staff, several students, campus public safety officers, neighbors and staff from the Portland Development Commission attended the meeting to learn more about PCC’s plans for an underground parking garage, alternative modes of transportation, potential development plans for PCC-owned storefronts on Killingsworth Street and the new Student Center.

Rick Williams, the consultant guiding PCC in its Transportation Demand Management (TDM) planning efforts, made a presentation outlining the proposed TDM plan for Cascade Campus at the meeting. He laid out performance goals  and the four-tiered strategy that PCC will implement to encourage its faculty, staff and students to use alternative modes of transportation, such as biking, walking, carpooling and commuting by bus or light rail to campus. One of the primary goals of the TDM plan is to reduce PCC employees’ and students’ vehicle trips to and from PCC campuses. (Rick Williams presentation)

The committee held its first meeting in November 2010; this April marked their thirteenth meeting to provide consultation to the PCC Bond Team and ask questions about the planning process for bond-funded capital improvements at Cascade Campus.

Notes from the meeting will be posted shortly.
