National recognition for Rock Creek associate dean

Photos and story by

Brenda Ivelisse, associate dean of student development at PCC’s Rock Creek Campus, is one of 22 Latinas from across the country selected to participate in the National Hispana Leadership Institute for 2012-13. The institute, located in Arlington, Va., is recognized for its work preparing Latinas for national leadership roles in public policy and community development.  Ivelisse was selected for the Class of 2013 by the Harvard Kennedy School for Executive Education Admissions Committee.

The program spans 11 months and includes four one-week sessions, each located in a different city to develop skills in cross-cultural communication, strategic management, public policy and leadership building; a mentorship component that commits participants to mentoring  other Latinas during the year, and finally, participants design and complete their individual leadership project that significantly impacts their home community. The 2013 program began in December 2012 and ends in October 2013.

Ivelisse, who lives in Portland, has been at Rock Creek since July 2006. She earned both her undergraduate degree and master’s degree from Washington State University.  Currently she is pursuing a doctorate in community college leadership at Oregon State University.
