Retired Cascade Campus dean Joan Hayward passes away after cancer battle
Photos and story by James Hill
Joan Hayward, a past dean of the Allied Health and Science Division at Cascade Campus, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 6, after a long battle with cancer.
Hayward got her start at PCC as a part-time instructor, and transitioned to full-time before eventually assuming responsibilities as chair of the Medical Records and Medical Assisting programs at the Sylvania Campus. She continued in that role after 1992 when, as part of a reorganization effort, the departments were moved to Cascade Campus. She ultimately became the dean of the Allied Health and Science Division in 1994. She retired from PCC in 2003 after 28 years of service. She returned in 2004 as interim Dean of Instruction at Cascade until Scott Huff began his tenure as DOI.
“Joan was a no-nonsense kind of person, always positive and upbeat,” recalled Ophthalmic Medical Technology Department Chair Joanne Harris. “She was well liked, admired and respected by those who worked for and with her. Joan was always the quintessential professional at work and someone who also became a well-loved personal friend.”
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb.16, at the Hotel Modera, 515 S.W. Clay St. in downtown Portland. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be sent to the Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital, www.dovelewis.org.
This is sad news. Joan certainly sounds like a wonderful person. I am also touched by her family’s request to donate to the animal hospital instead of spending on flowers. It shows she came from a family that cares. Rest in Peace Joan Hayward!
