From studying sound waves to the DNA of strawberries to the Mars Rover, the 2013 Hermanas Conference will offer workshops that could be life-changing for more than 150 female high school students from Beaverton, Hillsboro and Forest Grove.
Sponsored by Portland Community College and Intel Corporation’s Latino Employee Group, the Friday, Feb. 22, all-day event at the Rock Creek Campus is designed to attract young women to careers in science, technology, engineering and math, otherwise known as STEM.
Students will attend workshops lead by college faculty from civil and mechanical engineering, chemistry, bioscience technology, physics, math, and veterinary technology. They will also hear encouraging words from keynote speaker Dr. Frances A. Colon, deputy science and technology advisor to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
“For girls who may often be intimidated by non-traditional professions, male-dominated fields, or who lack the financial resources or preparation to enroll in college, the Hermanas Conference provides effective tools and practical pathways that enable them to successfully navigate these challenges,” said Gabriela Gonzalez, a founding member of the Hermanas Conference and the current program manager at Intel.
Since 2005, Intel Corporation has collaborated with a number of community colleges to expose female students to the world of science. To date, more than 2,100 students have attended Hermanas Conferences throughout the country.
Interested students should contact their respective high schools for registration information. Participating schools include Beaverton Health & Science School, Beaverton High School, Southridge High School, Sunset High and Westview; Forest Grove High School; Hillsboro High School; and Adlelante Mujeres.
