Construction began last December on a 210-space underground parking garage between N. Albina and Mississippi avenues, the first such structure to be built at any PCC campus. On top of the underground garage – scheduled to be completed by late 2013 – will be two new buildings, a student center and an academic building. The new garage is part of the college’s commitments to the neighbors and the city, as outlined in PCC’s Impact Mitigation Plan for Cascade Campus, to make additional parking available to help reduce the number of vehicles that park in the neighborhood.
The student center will house new food service and dining areas, student club and government offices, a lounge area, and flexible meeting space. The academic building will house classrooms and faculty work spaces, as well as something the campus has desired for a long time: a childcare center. When all is said and done, the area between the two buildings will be transformed into a landscaped pedestrian plaza.
For those interested in learning more about the site and the construction process, site tours are being offered on Tuesday afternoons, provided there are enough participants. To reserve a space, email Cascade Bond Project Manager, Rebecca Ocken.
PCC’s 2008 voter-approved $374 million bond program is increasing opportunities for residents to access quality, affordable higher education close to where they live and work. Additional classrooms, updated equipment and technology, and advanced workforce training programs are helping to pave the way for future employment options.
