PCC brings civic participation to Founders’ Week

Neal Naigus, assistant to the college president, and John Farnum, philosophy instructor, are gearing up for the May 16 forum.
The Center for Civic Participation (CCP) will hold its first official PCC Discusses: Talk for a Change event during Founders’ Week at PCC Sylvania. The topic for the discussion is “Democracy’s Challenge: Deliberations on the Public’s Role,” and will be held from 3-5 p.m., Thursday, May 16, in the PAC Lobby, Sylvania Campus.
The purpose of the event is providing a venue for a moderated discussion about the role that we all play in democracy and how each individual can make a difference. The event highlights the importance of coming together as a community to have these important discussions. Everyone is invited to attend and participate.
The CCP is inspired by the work of the National Issues Forum model developed by the Kettering Foundation. The underlying philosophy is that people need to come together to deliberate and discuss common problems. With decision makers often far removed from the everyday person, the participants in the CCP believe that democracy requires on ongoing informed dialogue among citizens in order to be effective and successful.
