PCC staff, faculty visit with state leaders about college’s value and vision
Photos and story by James Hill
More than 50 people from the college community attended the 2014 PCC Day at the Capitol in Salem on Tuesday, Feb. 25 to talk one-on-one with state legislators. For these attendees that included students and staff it was an opportunity to meet elected officials and lend a voice to the importance of funding higher education. The day included a luncheon at the Salem Convention Center where speakers Jeremy Brown (PCC president) and Joe Gallegos (House Representative for District 30 and PCC alum) talked about how PCC gives people the chance to earn a college education, get good jobs and achieve their dreams. From there students and staff broke up into teams and visited with their own representatives and senators at the Capitol building in the afternoon.
I attended this event and have vowed to help encourage more PCC Faculty and Students to attend the event next year…never in my wildest dreams would I ever have expected to be standing in the office waiting to talk to the Speaker of the House, Tina Kotek…how awesome is that!
I now consider this event for Faculty and Students to a potentially “once-in-a-lifetime event” you are guaranteed to never forget!
PCC provided transportation to those that needed it and a beautiful catered lunch that was delicious. It was a well planned out event and I was made an integral part of it right off the bat.
I hope to attend again next year if I am still at PCC and I seriously encourage all of you reading this to do the same!
A very honored and grateful Daniel D Walker
