New art exhibit at Cascade Campus explores identity, race
Photos and story by James Hill
The Cascade Campus Art Gallery is presenting Tammy Jo Wilson’s new artwork exploring identity and race. “Tammy Jo Wilson: Perspective,” opens at the gallery Feb. 26 and runs through April 3.
The opening reception is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, in the gallery, Room 102, Terrell Hall. From 4-5 p.m., Wilson gives an artist’s talk in Room 221, Moriarty Arts and Humanities Buildings. Both events are open to everyone.
Wilson uses a variety of media and processes including photography, video and fabric for the show. She questions the viewer’s assumptions around race and identity. She said her content pushes people to think again; literally and figuratively, to step back to gain perspective; and to accept an unclear answer.
Tammy Jo Wilson has exhibited up and down the West Coast and across the US. In 2012 her work was purchased by Multnomah County for the Portable Works Collection. In 2013, she was the recipient of an Oregon Arts Commission Grant for her work with the Women’s Caucus for Art. Wilson holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Pacific Northwest College of Art and a master’s degree in Fine Arts from San Jose State University.
Cascade Art Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
