Diesel Service Technology Program shows off to future students
Photos and story by James Hill
Nearly 300 high school students and nine of the largest heavy equipment companies in Oregon converged on the Rock Creek Campus’ 17,000-square-foot diesel shop to experience the 13th Annual Diesel Day in May. Each year during spring term, high school students throughout the region participate and dozens of PCC students in the Diesel Service Technology Program assist in demonstrating activities associated with their trade. The idea of Diesel Day is to showcase the program to potential students who are interested in repairing, and maintaining diesel engines and component support systems.
The program showed off their 50 diesel engines (some computer controlled), heavy-duty transmissions and differentials, fuel-efficient trucks, computer-controlled transmissions, and a variety of backhoes, Bobcat skid steers and forklifts. High schoolers got a glimpse of electronic engine programming, hydraulic circuits, fuel injector testing and electrical component troubleshooting. In addition, students had a chance to talk with local diesel employers about their respective industries and current employment opportunities. Employers at the event included Metro New Holland, Pacific Truck Centers, Ag West, Cummins NW, Clyde West, TEC Equipment, Bobcat West, Peterson Cat, Snap on, Napa and Anderson Brothers.
