The new spacious Rock Creek Student Learning Center (SLC) located in room 218 of the impressive bond-funded Building 7 addition, opened Spring semester of this year. The SLC was planned around the concept of bringing many student support resources, including tutoring, study space, computer lab, and printing, to one centralized space.
The SLC is home to PCC’s free one-on-one and group tutoring from faculty and peers. Tutors in Math, Science, Statistics, Accounting, Computer Science and Reading are available on a walk-in basis, keeping tutoring affordable, accessible and convenient for students.
The SLC computer room is equipped with 25 new Mac computers, a laser printer, and express printing station set aside for printing out an assignment quickly before class. Students say the faster computers and dedicated printing station increase their productivity, giving them more time to focus on their studies.
In addition to tutoring and computing resources, the SLC offers open study space and group study rooms. Natural lighting from a wall of double-paned glass windows screen-printed with a pattern that helps to maintain room temperature, results in a marked improvement over the SLC’s previous home. The SLC’s use of natural lighting, heating and cooling, with blinds and fans and the specially designed windows all contribute to Building 7’s goal of earning a Silver LEED rating for energy efficiency and sustainability.
PCC’S 2008 voter-approved $374 million bond program is increasing opportunities for residents to access quality, affordable higher education close to where they live and work. Additional classrooms, updated equipment and technology, and advanced workforce training programs are helping to pave the way for future employment options.
