Rock Creek’s Hermanas Conference: A Peek into the future

Photos and story by

It was a full day of thinking about new things for the 220 Latina girls who attended the 2015 Hermanas Conference at Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus. The event, sponsored by PCC and Intel, is meant to encourage students in grades 9-12 to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Following a welcome from Rock Creek Campus President Sandra Fowler-Hill, and a keynote address by Juanita Kurtin, co-founder of Pacific Light Technologies, the students headed across the campus to 8 topic-specific workshops all intended to whet their STEM appetites. For many of the participants, it was their first time on a college campus. One young Latina spoke for her group when she said, “We’ll be back.”
