Legislature’s budget committee stops by Rock Creek Campus
Photos and story by James Hill
The Oregon Legislature’s Ways and Means Committee, its joint budget committee, hosted a field hearing at the Rock Creek Campus, attracting hundreds of people from the community. The packed Event Center was filled with people wanting to give testimony about the budget, which is being decided for the next biennium. On hand were more than 20 students from the PCC Foundation’s Future Connect Scholarship Program to talk about House Bill 3063, which would expand Future Connect statewide. Before the testimony, the students met with committee member and Speaker Pre Tempore, State Rep. Tobias Read (District 27 – Beaverton), to tell their personal stories and the effect the program has had on their lives. It was also a chance for the college representatives to emphasize the $550 million funding ask for the next biennium for the state’s 17 community colleges.
The committee, which has traveled all over Oregon to listen to residents, has three more hearings slated for Thursday, April 23 (6:30 to 8 p.m.) in Springfield, Friday, April 24 (5:30 to 7 p.m.) at the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls and Saturday, April 25 (12:30 to 2 p.m.) at Grants Pass High School.

Great presentation and speeches.
Just a suggestion. If you came with that many people, please stay at least 30 mins, or leave one at a time. It may look bad on Future connect if 20 people or so just left right ( at 7:12pm, the event starts at 7) after 2 people from Future Connect speak. People might think you don’t care about other issues. We all should care about each other’s concern, that’s how a community is built
Well said Kenny
