As work continues on the new east entry to the Sylvania Campus College Center, exciting things are happening. Take for instance, the installation of the campus’ 3,000 pound, 30-foot tall “Welcoming Pole.” Carved by noted first nations artist Richard Hunt, the pole was recently lifted by a crane and bolted into place under the new tall, angled, glass atrium. Hunt was at Sylvania in December to refurbish the pole to repair decay from years of being outside near the bookstore (since 2001).

The opening of the new entry is estimated to take place in late May, as which time the campus community will come together to celebrate all the upgrades at Sylvania made possible by the 2008 voter-approved $374 million bond. Until then, have a sneak peek at the pole in its new home.
