Portland Teachers Program banks on its success
Photos and story by Abe Proctor
The Portland Teachers Program has received a $7,500 grant from the Union Bank Foundation to help the program in its efforts to increase diversity in the teaching ranks of Portland Public Schools and Beaverton School districts.
Program director Deborah Cochrane along with Matt Chase, major gifts officer with the PCC Foundation, collaborated on the application and were both happy to receive the check from Shawn DuBurg, vice president of Union Bank, in a recent visit to the Cascade Campus. Union Bank’s contribution is part of its commitment to education and community investment.
The Portland Teachers Program is a partnership between PCC, Portland Public Schools, Portland State University, the University of Portland and the Beaverton School District. It is designed to recruit and help prepare culturally competent teachers, with a special focus on historically underrepresented groups in the teaching profession. More than 130 students have graduated from PTP and there are approximately 65 students currently in the program.
It sure is nice of PCC to take a break from spending $300,000 on Jeremy Brown’s severance to spend $7,500 on diversity.
Deborah: Congratulations! So glad to see this nice contribution to such an important program.

I am interested to become a teacher in State of Oregon, I have reached in Somalia two decades ago and currently I teach adults as a jobs skills trainer. However, I would like to give more information about the program.
Congratulations Deborah! This is awesome and great acknowledgement for the work you do. :)
