Rock Creek Campus staff, students see the sign

Story by Janis Nichols. Photos by James Hill.

Some students complete their college courses and leave campus without a trace. Others, like Rock Creek Campus welding student Robert Ellertson, leave a sign you can see from the space shuttle. On Monday, May 11, an enthusiastic crowd gathered at the entrance to the Rock Creek Campus for the unveiling of a new monument sign. The 21-foot-long steel behemoth, illuminated by solar panels, was Ellertson’s welding capstone project. While the sign has a recognition plaque that credits him with the design and construction, he is quick to credit the Welding Department, the Auto Collision Repair Program, and a host of faculty and fellow students who contributed time and energy.

Ellertson’s creation is a replacement for the original wooden sign that lives again as compost. The project was designed to reuse the original stone and metal foundation. Funding for the project came from ASPCC, the campus Welding Club and from Cheryl Scott, the Rock Creek Campus’ Dean of Instruction.

That looks pretty good, How much did the sign cost to erect?
