Message from Interim President: Our condolences to Umpqua Community College

by Sylvia Kelley

Dear PCC Community,

I write this note to you with a heavy heart, having learned of the active shooter situation at Umpqua Community College. Our thoughts and condolences are with our colleagues and students not far south from us.

In light of the tragedy, PCC’s public safety department has increased the presence of its officers at all of our campuses and local-area centers and also has asked local law enforcement that serves the PCC district to assist by increasing patrols around the college campuses and centers. Be assured that the department regularly reviews its active shooter protocols, and the college as a whole continues to practice emergency drills with staff and students so that we as an institution are prepared.

Additionally, our Student Services/Advising and Counseling personnel college-wide are aware of the situation and able to provide support for students in distress at this time. Faculty and staff: Please steer students toward this service should you see those in need of additional support. And for employees needing assistance and support, please encourage them to contact the Employee Assistance Program which offers crisis help.

We don’t yet know all of the details surrounding the situation at Umpqua. We are continuing to monitor the event and provide support and services for our faculty, staff, students and the community at large. Today’s news from Umpqua is tragic, and we send our prayers to the college and those it serves.

Take time today to comfort and support one another.

Regards,

Sylvia Kelley

Interim PCC President
