2015 Top News Stories: Students rule readers’ choices on PCC profiles

Welcome to our top-list of most read stories. Each week during the past year, we have featured the story of a program, event, student, faculty or staff member at Portland Community College. 1) Scholarly Pursuits

Tuong HoangPortland Community College students Tuong Hoang and Quynh Do can add “national scholars” to their academic résumés. Hoang was named one of 50 community college students from the United States and American Samoa who are 2015 New Century Scholars while Do was one of 50 selected from across the country as this year’s Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholars.

2) In a League of Her Own

Frances FaganFagan, who began at PCC taking Transitions Program classes, had been mulling Mount Holyoke College, Cornell and Yale as possible transfer destinations. However, it was Yale’s Ethnicity, Race, and Migration Program that won her over to further her interest in refugee camp designs and how they relate to common library infrastructures.

3) Bigfoot at PCC? April Fools!

Bigfoot?Is Bigfoot roaming the forest at the Sylvania Campus?  “This is more significant than when we spotted the Loch Ness Monster in the Rock Creek koi pond,” said PCC Monster Spotters Student Club President Harley Anderson. “This time, it’s definitely not a swimming labradoodle. This is a real monster. It’s Bigfoot!”

4) Inclusion in Action

 Inclusion in ActionPortland Community College has the highest population of transgender and gender nonconforming students of any community college in Oregon and one of the highest of any higher education institution in the state.

5) Soccer Returns to PCC

Soccer Returns to PCCOn a hot August day under the Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation District’s soccer field pavilion, Walter Arevalo is the center of attention. Arevalo welcomes players to the artificial turf field next to Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus, handing each their blue-and-white jerseys, white shorts and multi-band long socks with impressive skill and swiftness.

6) Taking the Lead

Kole MyrickAt Portland Community College’s 53rd Commencement Ceremony, Myrick will address more than 1,000 fellow graduates and thousands more in friends, family and community members. He’ll discuss his story of being a trans man going from homelessness to honor student and student leader, and how he learned to ask for help.

7) PCC’s diamond discovery

PCC's diamond discoveryPCC has announced its annual Diamond Alumni Awards for 2015. This honor is bestowed upon PCC graduates who have become successful in their chosen field or who are community leaders, making a difference in the lives of many.

8) Hasan Alhamwi happy to serve

Hasan AlhamwiFollowing the civil war that broke out in Syria, Hasan Alhamwi found himself in no man’s land. He was studying civil engineering in his northern Syrian hometown of Aleppo in 2012 when he abruptly left the country as rebel fighting and terrorist attacks encroached on his government-controlled city.

9) Artist’s walks in the park

Soyoung ParkPark is a transplant to Portland from Seoul, South Korea. While her husband worked at Oregon Health & Science University as a visiting dentistry professor, Park sought to acclimate to her new home. Part of this process included enrolling at PCC in January 2014 for English language training so she could better communicate with the locals.

10) Scholars of Space

Space!Students Andrew Jozwiak of Beaverton and Abram Morphew of Southwest Portland are taking part in a Mars rover program this month at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. In addition, Tanner Hageman of Southeast Portland is headed to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas the last week of October to take part in a red planet-related robotics project.
