More than 60 volunteers help honor MLK Day as part of Oregon Campus Compact effort

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday was much more than a holiday for many in the PCC community.

PCC sent more than 60 staff, faculty and students to help with Oregon Campus Compact’s 7th Annual MLK Day of Service (“We are the Dream: MLK Jr. Day of Collaborative Service.”) on Jan. 18. The Community-Based Learning Program and Cascade Multicultural Center represented the college as part of the event. In addition, PCC had five student project leaders that coordinated teams of 25 volunteers through their service projects. The Oregon Campus Compact-led day included Concordia University, George Fox University, Mt. Hood Community College, Portland State University, University of Portland and Warner Pacific College, who brought more than 500 college students to improve schools and local community organizations at 15 sites in east Portland and Gresham.

The service projects helped to prompt student volunteers to reflect on the teachings of Dr. King, the value of education and community, and how they as students can help strengthen the relationship between schools and community.

Some of these pictures were taken at Dharma Rain Zen Center where volunteers weeded out invasive plants, planted and mulched new trees and built a split-rail fence.
It was so exciting to see two buses full of students show up to work with us. The weather cooperated and we had a great time. Thank you so much for all the hard work on MLK Monday!
