More than 100 middle school students visited the Sylvania Campus on Wednesday, July 19 for the “Your Future Begins Today!” event, which was sponsored by Portland Community College, Beaverton School District and the Portland Metro STEM Partnership.

Part of the Beaverton School District’s Migrant Education Program, the students participated in a variety of STEM activities through hands-on experience in engineering, the MakerSpace, native plants and insects, anatomy and health professions, and connections of chemistry to shelter, water, art, and transportation. Students were divided into groups and visited the greenhouse, laboratories, art gallery, swimming pool, and classrooms.

The program provides help with education and other needs for children ages 3 to 21 who move frequently because they, their parents, or guardians work in agriculture, fishing, or forestry. It helps this population overcome problems that result from repeated moves, so the children can be successful in school, graduate from high school and go onto college or employment after graduation.
