Gerontology program celebrates new graduates

Photos and Story by

With the college’s graduation set for June 10, it’s official – PCC campuses are in full swing hosting completion ceremonies to celebrate students’ achievements prior to graduation.

The 2011 gerontology graduates that were able to attend the completion ceremony pose for a photo with PCC faculty and staff.

At the Sylvania Campus, the gerontology program kicked off the “completion ceremony season” on May 24. Joining forces with the Ageless Network gerontology student club, they hosted a celebration to honor the accomplishments of those students receiving a degree or certificate from the gerontology program. The event served as an opportunity for current and former students to connect with faculty and staff, as well as with community partners that contribute to the success of the gerontology program.

Sylvania Campus President Linda Gerber and Gerontology Program Director Jan Abushakrah presented awards of achievement to graduates in attendance. As students were introduced, each shared something from his or her personal story with the audience. The stories shared a common theme: In studying the field of aging, students had found their future paths opening up in unimaginable directions – some in careers that currently exist, and others waiting to find or invent opportunities that will become their life work.

Roger Anunsen leads a breakout session of sorts with PCC gerontology students at this year’s completion ceremony. Anunsen will teach a one-credit gerontology course this fall on brain health and cognitive fitness for older learners. He is a regular presenter and panelist at American Society on Aging conferences.
