Jewelry art class decorates personal history

Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – Typically we capture our past in diaries and photographs, yet a new Portland Community College non-credit course adds another dimension to how we explore our history. Join PCC for an unusual opportunity to create jewelry that interprets personal history. Jewelry Art: History and Creativity Come Alive! offers the chance to make wearable art that symbolizes a particular memory, or a complete lifetime. Students will create and design jewelry themselves, with options to transform old jewelry into new designs. The result is personal art that captures the individual. The class is lead by instructor Di Petroff, well-known for her antique beaded jewelry made of antique glass, jet and other rare materials originating from the Czech Republic, China and Equatorial Africa. "No two designs are the same,"says Petroff. "Everything I do has a personal touch and is intended as a custom piece of jewelry art?it’s an investment in something real." The eight-week class will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursdays, July 8 through Aug. 26, in Room 1511 of PCC’s Washington County Workforce Training Center, 18624 N.W. Walker Road. Cost is $125 which includes materials, tools, and bead store certificate. For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-533-2708.
