SYLVANIA CAMPUS – On Monday, June 21 the PCC Upward Bound program will welcome its first group of 50 high school students from the Beaverton and Tigard-Tualatin districts to the Sylvania Campus for an intensive six-week summer session of classes, research projects and career exploration activities. Upward Bound, a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Education, will help increase the number of low-income, first-generation college bound Latino youth who plan to complete high school and enter college. PCC earned a four-year $880,000 federal grant and last fall began to identify students from five different high schools students from Aloha, Sunset, Merlo Station, Tigard and Tualatin high schools. Students will start their camp at 9 a.m. on Monday with introductions in the Science Technology Building, Room 225 on the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Monday through Thursday mornings students will study math, science, Spanish and English. In the afternoon Mondays and Wednesdays, they will break into two groups to work on research projects. On Fridays, students have SAT preparation and various other activities, such as leadership and career exploration. Afternoon field trips will also be scheduled to other colleges, businesses or the art museum. "Upward Bound’s summer session promises to be both fun and exciting, and Upward Bound staff, students and instructors are all eager to begin,"said Jean Garcia Chitwood, Upward Bound director. "I’m especially pleased about our students’ opportunity to have a real college experience at PCC being on campus will validate their aspirations to go to college more than any other service we can provide."
