Photos and story by James Hill
BEAVERTON – Practical advice on how to decorate your home on a budget will be offered during a five-part non-credit series being offered this fall by Portland Community College. The five sessions build on each other to teach the basic skills of home decorating within a budget. Sessions will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays, Sept. 26 through Oct. 24, in room N116 at Westview High School, 4200 N.W. 185th Ave. Tuition for the entire series is $50. Tuition for individual sessions is $11. The instructor will be Carol Pitchard. The series begins Sept. 26 with Budget Decorating. Students will learn how to use what they already have to decorate, where to discount shop, and the art of improvisation. Session two set for Oct. 3, will cover Basic Principles and Elements of Design. Topics include the use of space, line, form, color, balance and texture to produce a completed look. The series continues Oct. 10 with Developing a Color Scheme. As the most vital element of interior design, color sets the tone and balance of a room. Students will learn how to use a color wheel to give each room a unique look. The fourth session in the series will focus on identifying personal style. What is Your Style? on Oct. 17 will build from the premise that "fashion is not always in style but style is always in fashion." An Oct. 24 session on Accessorizing will conclude the series. Students will learn how to put the finishing touches on their decorating efforts. For more information, contact PCC Beaverton Community Education at 503-614-7308.
