Global Green Day shows community what's in its food

PORTLAND, Ore. – What in the world is in your food? Come find out with Portland Community College’s inaugural Global Green Day.
This event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 in Building 3 at the Rock Creek Campus (17705 N.W. Springville Road). Come celebrate agricultural traditions of peoples from around the world, learn how to support healthy communities, find information about locally-grown food and connect with people who like to garden.
Activities include a composting demonstration by Ammi Ludwick, Metro’s Worm Lady; seed planting and transplanting demonstration; games and book displays; information tables; and campus eco-tours. Food will be provided by Flaming Carrot Catering.
Highlights include Linda Hummer, Portland State University sociology professor, presenting on “Conventional Agricultural Practices and its Health Consequences” at 11 a.m. in The Forum; a welcoming by Preston Pulliams, Portland Community College district president and performances by African American Ballet “Seve” Kan" at noon in The Forum; and John Gardner, local farmer, will present on community-supported farming practices at 1 p.m. in the Building 2 Town Hall.
During the month of April, the Rock Creek Campus will also host a film series in conjunction with Global Green Day. The films focus on food issues and will show every Thursday evening (April 13 through May 4) at 6:30 p.m. in Room 101 at Building 7. The films include “Life and Debt,” about the survival of Jamaicans (April 13); “The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil,” (April 20); “Justice on the Table,” about Willamette Valley farm labor issues (April 27); and “The Future of Food” (May 4).
