PCC joins Emporia University's diversity initiative for libraries

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded Emporia University a grant to fund its diversity initiative, which will include PCC’s Library. Emporia has an active School of Library and Information Management via distance learning in the Portland area. The goal of the grant is to promote diversity among new librarians. PCC is one of three institutions in Oregon that will be a partner. Congrats to Sheila Afnan-Manns, Sylvania Campus reference librarian, who contributed PCC documentation to the application for the grant. Berniece Owen, interim director of the PCC libraries, helped spear-head the partnership.
Emporia plans to request $1 million to recruit, mentor and graduate 30 ethnic minority students with undergraduate, masters and doctorate degrees in library services between 2006 and 2010. The organization is inviting library associations and institutions, local colleges, universities, and civic organizations in Kansas, Colorado and Oregon to partner in this effort. Max Macias, library technician, has expressed interest in being a candidate for a master’s degree in library science through this program.
