PCC students lend a hand in Southeast Portland clean up

Photos and story by

On Saturday, March 7, student leaders from the Southeast Campus worked side by side with Mayor Charlie Hales, local business owners, residents, and Jade District and APANO volunteers to beautify Southeast Portland neighborhoods. This included cleaning up surrounding business districts and building raised garden beds at the Harrison Park Community Garden. The event was organized by Trami Nguyen, who is an intern at APANO and a PCC student at Southeast. She reported that more than 80 community volunteers picked up 20 bags of trash around the neighborhood, removed graffiti from three buildings along SE 82nd Avenue, built 20 beds at the community garden and improved an outdoor table tennis play area at Harrison Park School.

“It was a great effort in a neighborhood that’s owning its space and building community for a livable neighborhood,” said Nguyen.

According to one student volunteer, it was fun to work with Mayor Hales on the raised beds as he is “a pretty good carpenter.”
