Photos and story by James Hill
ROCK CREEK CAMPUS – Portland Community College’s Landscape Technology and Building Construction Technology programs will host a career day 9 a.m. to noon, on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at the Rock Creek Campus, located at 17705 N.W. Springville Road. High school students from around the area have been invited to see demonstrations, try their hand at a variety of skills and speak with industry insiders as well as get a chance to win prizes and enjoy refreshments."This is the first combined career day for the programs and the idea is to get high school students who are currently in professional-technical classes on campus and show them a little about what college life is all about," said Spencer Hinkle, instructor in Building Construction Technology. "We have developed a lot of hands-on activities that are located strategically around the campus for the students. We want to make it fun for them and have them learn about construction and our programs in the process. Hopefully, they’ll go away with information about the college and it will get back to their parents."The students can expect to see an exhibit area and demonstrations by experienced professionals in the landscape, nursery and building construction industries. There will also be union and non-union representatives on hand to discuss the highest paying careers in the industries. And there will be skill competitions like nail driving contests, estimating board footage, wheelbarrow races, carrying the most flower pots and finding hidden treasures using surveying equipment. Some of the jobs that will be explored in the career day festivities include tree care and golf course maintenance, brick and concrete masonry, glaziers (glass workers), steel and iron workers, landscape construction and many more. The PCC career day is sponsored by Portland Public Schools, Associated General Contractors, Teufel Landscape, J.B. Instant Sod, Construction Specification Institute, Cement Masons, Hoffman Mechanical Corp., Bethany Development Co. and Avery Landscaping. For more information, call 503-614-7255.
