PCC Slates Professional Development Series

LAKE OSWEGO – Positive relationships and personal effectiveness will be the focus of a six-part, non-credit professional development series offered this winter by Portland Community College. The series will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 10 through March 21, at Nature’s Northwest, 17711 Jean Road. Cost is $10 for the entire series or $2 for individual sessions.The series begins Jan. 10 with Can One Person Make a Difference? Participants will learn how to become a catalyst for constructive change. The discussion will focus on influencing people with integrity; fostering courage, commitment and clarity of purpose; and dealing with temporary setbacks.Office Politics and Ethics will be explored Jan. 24. Topics include succeeding in interpersonal relations, handling disagreements and office gossip, and understanding power plays. The series continues Feb. 7 with Image Savvy: Your First Impression is a Lasting Impression. Participants will learn how to identify their current image and project a more positive, professional look. Building Understanding and Consensus with Others will be discussed Feb. 21. Tips will be offered on how to build common ground between people with differing points of view by establishing rapport and facilitating decision-making. Criticism is the topic of the March 7 session, titled Understanding the Critic Personality. Participants will learn to understand the person behind the criticism and their motivation for speaking critically. How to handle a personal attack will also be explored. The series concludes March 21 with Change Your Language – Change Your Life. The talk will focus on how using words in a powerful way shapes reality and influences well being, self-esteem and creativity. For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-731-6622.
