Southeast Center garners attention from media

The excitement is growing and the energy is palpable. With two new buildings opening, Portland Community College’s Southeast Center is well on its way to becoming a full campus. More than 100 people attended the recent ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Library and Student Commons in early April, including elected officials, representatives from local school districts and members of the media.

The PCC Board of Directors is expected to approve the change in Southeast’s status from a center to a full campus at its monthly meeting on May 15. The transition, due mostly to expansions and improvements made through the recent $374 million and past voter-approved bond programs, has enabled expanded class offerings that allow students to complete an associate’s or transfer degree without traveling to another PCC campus. The full transition would be in effect for the fall, 2014 term.
The second floor of the new Library features independent and group study areas. Openings in the ceiling allow light to filter from the roof through to the third and second floors.
PCC’S 2008 voter-approved $374 million bond program is increasing opportunities for residents to access quality, affordable higher education close to where they live and work. Additional classrooms, updated equipment and technology, and advanced workforce training programs are helping to pave the way for future employment options.
