Photos and Story by

Experience an art explosion May 11-15 at all three Portland Community College campuses, when the 12th annual Art Beat brings an eclectic mix of music, film, theater, painting, pottery, dance and literary genius to all art enthusiasts. All events are free and open to the public.

Featured performances and presentations include sculpture work by San Francisco’s Mary King, a film and discussion by Baba Waugue Kiakite, clay mask work by Lillian Pitt, Irish step dancing by Murray Irish Dancers, a concert by the PCC Cascade Big Band, The Olde World Puppet Theatre for children and more than 60 other artistic entries from the worlds of literature, visual arts and music. A brochure listing each day’s activities, times and artists is available at PCC campus information centers.

Art Beat T-shirts featuring reproductions of the intriguing mask sculpture of Lillian Pitt are available for $15 at campus bookstores, display tables and other selected locations, beginning May 1.

Sharon Anthony, a long-time committee member for Art Beat, said the mission of the art festival is to bring diverse artistic talents together into an educational setting. A trademark of Art Beat is the ability of aspiring artists and art aficionados to mingle and talk with the featured artists about their chosen craft.

"Art Beat is an on-going effort of the college to bring the world of arts to our students and others," said Anthony. "It is not just an entertaining week, it’s really educational."

The PCC Cascade Campus is located at 705 N. Killingsworth. PCC Rock Creek can be found in Washington County at 17705 N.W. Springville Road, and PCC Sylvania is located at 12000 S.W. 49th Avenue.
