PCC Offers Professional Skills Development Lecture Series

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. – A series of non-credit workshops on professional and personal development is being offered this fall by Portland Community College.The six-session series is designed for work teams or individuals who want to increase productivity and improve working relationships. Sessions will be held from noon to 1 p.m. every other Wednesday, Sept. 26 through Dec. 5, at Nature’s Northwest, 17711 Jean Way.Tuition for the entire series is $10.Tuition for individual sessions is $2. The series opens Sept. 26 with Confronting the Hidden Agenda. Instructor Joseph Kurtright will explore how to uncover the real issues when a personal reaction doesn’t "match"an event. He will teach participants how to listen past the immediate problem to identify underlying needs and concerns.The second session in the series, The Balance Between Humility and Confidence, will focus on commanding respect and taking risks in the workplace with the appropriate amount of humility and a "listening/learning"mindset. Instructor Margie Chance will offer tips on how to come across strong, open-minded and unpretentious in this session, to be held Oct. 10.Instructor Phil Mandel will share a simple six-second technique for reducing stress in the Oct. 24 session, titled Reduce Stress in 6 Seconds or Less. He will discuss the positive impact stress reduction has on communication, relationships and physical health.The Power of Attraction and how to use it constructively in the workplace is the topic of the Nov. 7 session. Instructor Elizabeth Marcum will discuss how to use non-verbal cues and body posture to make a good first impression and create a powerful image that conveys an individual’s real persona.The importance of introspection and self-reflection as key to success both in and out of the workplace will be explored by instructor Dianna Adams during Introspection, Commitment and Kindness on Nov. 21.The series concludes Dec. 5 with Conflict Prevention. Instructor Larry Sears will discuss techniques that help minimize sources of conflict before they escalate.
