PCC, partners offer free, high-tech training for non-native speakers

WASHINGTON COUNTY – Portland Community College and a consortium of circuit board manufacturers in Washington County are offering an entry-level, high-tech skills training program. Consortium members include Merix Corporation, Vanguard EMS, Matsushita Electronic Materials, Inc. and Cascade Microtech. The training program is geared to individuals who are interested in entering the high-tech field and focuses primarily on non-native English speakers in Washington County. High-tech consortium members plan to hire from the pool of students completing the training. Job search assistance will also be offered. This six-week training is free. Classes will be held at the PCC Capital Career Center, located at 18624 N.W. Walker Road in Beaverton. The training is set for May 27 through June 3, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.The training consists of an introduction to working in the high-tech industry; safety on the job; blueprint and diagram reading; statistical process control introduction; touring of high-tech companies; communication and teamwork on the job; employer expectations; reading, writing and math skills; and basic computer skills. The requirements for entry into the short-term training are that individuals must be 18 years of age with proper work authorization documents; and have conversational English and basic math skills.PCC offers training orientations from 1 to 3 p.m. each Wednesday through May 14 at the Capital Career Center in room 1520.
