Sustainability series teaches practical green living

PORTLAND, Ore. – We know that environmentally conscious living is critical to the wellbeing of our planet, but is it possible to integrate these practices easily into our hectic lives? A new Portland Community College non-credit series says, "yes".Sustainable Practice Series – Will demonstrate how to "live green"easily. We can all participate, in many aspects, without much sacrifice. Come hear from a variety of speakers as to how you can help, with classes held in Room 102 of Building 3 at PCC’s Rock Creek Campus, 17705 N.W. Springville Road. Offerings are as follows:Sustainability: Making a Difference. Explore the positive steps that each of us can take to make our lifestyles and workplaces more sustainable. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 3. Cost is $29.Voluntary Simplicity. Does the way you spend your time and money reflect your values? Do you balance the conflicting demands of work, family, friend, community and sleep? Identify what is most important to you and clear the clutter! The class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 17. Cost is $15.Organic Lawn Care Plus. If you use and organic approach to lawn care, your lawn stays healthy and is easier on the environment. Consider alternatives to lawns, including eco-lawns and freedom lawns, which is a minimal-input approach to lawn care! The class will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 20. Cost is $15.Residential and Green Building Design. Explore simple, affordable design practices such as a building layout or site design, passive solar and more. Adding a few design elements into your project can promote green building design and save money. The class will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 24. Cost is $15.Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We produce more solid waste than any other country in the world. Find out about pre-recycling, composting, alternatives to hazardous household waste, and other ways to conserve natural resources. The class will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1. Cost is $15.Got Mold? What is mold? Why does it grow in houses? Does mold make people sick? How can it be removed? How can it be prevented from returning? Find out why with Michael O’Brien of the City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development. The class will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 15.
