Students showcase the art they created during the COVID-19 pandemic
Photos and story by James Hill
Students faced challenges as Portland Community College moved to remote operations during the pandemic. Everyone has their own stories from that intense week of Spring Break 2020 and the subsequent years of building new ways of working and studying. And the new exhibition in the North View Gallery at the Sylvania Campus provides space for sharing those stories from students’ experiences conveyed through the art they made during the pandemic.
PCC presents “IRL: An In-Person Show of PCC Student Work from Past Online Exhibitions,” which is on display at the gallery through May 6 in the North View Gallery on the Sylvania Campus. Staff invite you to marvel at the work made by students from the Art, Multimedia and Music + Sonic Arts programs in both remote and in-person classes between 2020 and 2023.
“The art in this exhibition stands as a testament to PCC students continuing to push themselves and make moving, beautiful, weird and wonderful art during a time of great duress.,” said Christine Weber, art history faculty. “The work in this exhibition also illustrates the resilience and ingenuity of our amazing faculty, who almost exactly three years ago, with only one week to prepare, began teaching classes on Zoom for the first time.”
