‘Last Wednesday’ features Cascade students’ creativity

“Hide not your talents,” said Benjamin Franklin more than 200 years ago. “They for use were made. What’s a sundial in the shade?”
The talents of Cascade Campus will have their time in the sun at the upcoming “Last Wednesday Celebration,” taking place throughout the day on Wednesday, March 16, in the Moriarty Arts & Humanities Building, corner of North Albina Avenue and Killingsworth Street.
“Last Wednesday” – so named because it is held on the last day of the academic term – is a showcase for students from the campus’ Art, Multimedia and Professional Music programs.
“It should be a really exciting day,” said Kate Dins, dean of the campus’ Arts & Professions Division. “It’s a chance for our students to show off their work. It gives them a tremendous sense of accomplishment to not only share their work with the public, but to see how they have improved over the course of the term”
Visual art – paintings, drawings, sketches and more – will be on display in the Moriarty Building throughout the day, as will sculptures and other work from Ceramics students.
“It’s wonderful when our students get to share the fruits of their creative efforts,” said Ceramics instructor Sam Morgan.
The Multimedia laboratory, in Room 217, will be open from noon to 8 p.m., with a range of student work on display.
“It’s an opportunity for people to come in and see what we do in the Multimedia program, and see some student work,” said Beth Fitzgerald, chair of the Multimedia department. “People can see animations, interactive projects, video – pretty much everything we do here.”
Fitzgerald added that for those who might be interested in enrolling in Multimedia courses, she and her staff will be available for informal drop-in advising until 6 p.m.
The day’s centerpiece event – performances from the Professional Music students – takes place at 6:30 p.m. in the Moriarty Auditorium (Room 104). Students from Allen Jones’ Band Performance Workshop course, as well as those from Dan Pettis’ vocal and instrumental courses, will entertain the crowd.
“It should be an exciting show,” said Jones. “We’ve been blessed with some unusually talented students this term, so the concert should be a real treat. There will be numerous styles represented, so there should be a little something for everyone.”
